Autumn leaves crunch underfoot as you wander up the path to the back entrance. The afternoon sun peaks through the wooded glade casting intricate shadows upon the chapel and the main worship space. Window panes reflect the trees and clear, blue sky. At times, the worship space doors open wide to the grassy, outdoor gathering area where one can fully connect to the natural surroundings.
A warm glow illuminates the main entrance in early evening. A jutting roof line provides shelter as one walks through the front door. To the right, the rector's office and reception area are there to greet you. Further down the drive, lights pour out from the kitchen window where folks gather for coffee and conversation. At the end of the drive, just before the parking lot, the enclosed nursery playground awaits the joyful sound of children's laughter.
Through the front doors and into a pattern of lines and light, dark wood and white. To the left, there's a cloak room with hangers, and rubber mats for snowy boots. To the right, a hall takes one past reception, the kitchen, washrooms and the education wing. Stepping forward takes you into the open foyer, complete with chesterfield, coffee table and cozy fireplace.
Light pours in from all angles as the ceiling rises into the distance of the Incarnation worship space. A sense of awe and wonder fills the room each Sunday morning as parishioners gather to celebrate the Eucharist. Windows that open to the outdoor green space create a connection to nature and the world beyond the walls. Liturgical seasons, special events, or simply the need for a change dictate the configuration of chairs and the placement of the moveable altar. Flexibility of soul and space define Incarnation's building and community.
It's night. It's cold and crisp. Inside, family and friends join together to lift their voices in song. They gather round an evergreen tree, decorated with hand-made treasures, to hear an ancient story. It's Christmas at Incarnation, the church in the woods. |
